I love moisturizers and all kinds of body products. Anyone who knows me personally is aware of this, particularly my love for moisturizer. I have moisturizers in every corner of my house, in my bedroom, bathroom, couch, and even in my kitchen. I just love that soft and smooth feeling on my skin. I used to be very particular in the texture and brand of the moisturizer that I buy.
When I went to nursing school, I learned that the skin has pores that can absorb whatever we apply on it and it gets in our bloodstream. We have medications that we apply on the skin such as ointment and creams, and also patches like nicotine patches, nitro patches, and so much more. Back then, it didn’t occur to me that whatever I put on my skin gets absorbed. I don’t know why, I guess I was just blind. Nobody questioned it, therefore who am I to question it?
I became curious when I started doing research on how to live healthy the natural way. Just like what every person who have done their research, I looked at the back of every moisturizers I had and read the ingredients. All of them have chemicals that I didn’t know what. They’re just hard to pronounce and hard to read. And I was putting it on my body? I was shocked. I almost felt like I was lied to. Now, it just makes sense to me to not put anything on my skin unless I can eat it.
So, right there and then, I threw away all of my moisturizers, makeups, deodorants, and everything else that has chemicals including soap and house cleaning stuff. I immediately switched to using natural products like coconut oil, essential oils and baking soda. I decided that if I am going to put something on my skin, I have to be able to eat it too. If I can’t eat it, I won’t apply it on my skin.
I started making my own moisturizer and I’m so excited about it! Its way better than the moisturizers that I used to buy. It’s chemical free. And it’s very liberating to be able to make my very own. And I would be glad to share it with everyone who doesn’t know this yet.
My base ingredients are coconut oil, cacao butter and shea butter. You can buy this from amazon or at the health food store. Melt them all together in a double boiler. Put it in the freezer for like 15 minutes or until it hardened. And then use an electric handheld mixer to whip it. I’m telling you it looks like a whipped cream that you see on your cake and it smells so good. From those ingredients you can add different essential oils like sweet orange, or maybe add a few drops of vanilla essence before you whip them. You’re going to smell delicious. It’s so good that once you do this, you will never buy anymore moisturizer.
Another thing that I want to share with everyone is that I don’t use deodorant anymore. Wait, what??? Yep. I ditched the deodorant a long time ago. And guess what, I don’t stink at all. Well, most of the time. Why did I do that? Here’s why.
Have you ever noticed the high rate of breast cancer nowadays? It’s so common that you probably know someone close to you who has it or who had it. It’s a very scary thing. Once you see a lump on your breast, you go see a doctor, and you get your diagnosis. Then your doctor will tell you that you could die from it if you don’t get rid of it right away. So, hurry up and get a biopsy and get it out, do chemo and radiation.
So here’s why I don’t use deodorant anymore. Armpits and groin area, we have different sweat glands called apocrine glands and they excrete the “stinky” type of sweat. Some people produce strong smell while others produce mild depending on your stress level. That stinky sweat are the toxins your body is trying to get rid off. You should not stop that process by putting deodorant or antiperspirant. If you do, then you would stop the toxins from coming out, and on top of that, you will be adding toxic chemicals in your body through your armpits. Those blocked toxins and the toxins from the deodorant can block your sweat glands and back up to the lymph node and they will accumulate there. And it turns into a lump. You don’t have to believe me. Just do your own research.
When I was a teenager, I was told that my armpits stink and that I needed to use deodorant. And I was so embarrassed that it became a part of my personal hygiene. If I was running out of deodorant, I would stress out. Little did I know that having that stinky sweat from my armpits is actually helpful for my body. Had I known that back then, I would probably just let my armpits sweat and stink and care less about it.
Now, are you surprised why we have a high rate of breast cancers? I mean, it’s not just the deodorant that causes it. I’m totally convinced that the food that we eat, our emotions, the medications that most of us take, the stressful lifestyle that we have, has a lot to do with it. But one thing for sure, if there’s anything I can do to prevent me from having breast cancer, I will do it. And that is not using any toxic deodorant.
Nowadays, we are so “hygienic” and germophobes (someone who is very scared of germs) that we even have sanitizers. If you stink or don’t wash your hands, you’re considered nasty. I know this because I used to believe that way too. I was crazy about “being clean” and washing my hands all the time. I really thought it was a good thing. Well, not anymore. I have been hearing from functional medicine doctors that bacteria is good for us. The more diverse your microbiome is, the more healthier you are. But that’s another topic in itself which I will share with you all soon.
So, what do I use now as a substitue? I use my homemade moisturizers all over my body including my armpits. From time to time, I would put diluted essential oils if I want to have fragrance, like lavender, jasmine or ylang ylang. And that’s it, really.
I can understand how scary it is at first. But if you are brave enough to try it like me, you’ll know what I mean 🙂
